The Emmaus Ålands Camp Team 2006

This is a picture from the Emmaus Summer Camp 2006. We had great time and made many excursions. By bike, by car, by foot. On this occation we went to Kökar, Källskär by boat.

I am Carina

Hello everybody,
I am Carina, the manager at Emmaus Åland. Together with Linda, whom you already have "met" and Britt-Marie - another key-person that you soon will meet here on the blog, we are the organising team at Emmaus Åland Summer Camp 2007. But the most important team is made up by the other local volunteers, the ordinary staff and friends of Emmaus and by you- the camp members. We will work together during two weeks in August. It might in fact be a lot of sorting and baling work waiting for us. It is important to be flexible and patient. And to have fun.
I am 43 years old. Single mother to Walter 7 years. I have been engaged in Emmaus since 1995. At the moment I am a politician and a MP, but Emmaus will always be where my heart and my home is. I will also be the Conférencier at the famous Emmaus Fashion Show, it is a job I have had for the last twelve years.
This is all for now. Please, don´t hesitate to write your own post on the blog or send a comment.
It would be nice for us to know if you have read the web page, or if it is only information that goes to Linda and me....

Infosheet

EMMAUS ÅLAND WORK CAMP
5/8-19/8 2007
INFO SHEET

DEAR VOLUNTEER,
Thank you for your interest in participating in the annual work camp at Emmaus Åland in Mariehamn, on the Åland Islands. We at Emmaus Åland are really looking forward to meet you this summer. This information sheet will hopefully provide you with all the basic information you need to know in advance but please get in touch with us if you have any further questions about the camp.

PLACE
The Åland Islands is an archipelago that consists of more than 6500 islands and skerries (small rocky islets) scattered between Finland and Sweden. The population of the Åland Islands is about 27 000. Our camp takes place in the only town, Mariehamn, which is inhabited by almost 40 % of the whole population. Åland is an autonomous, demilitarised and monolingual Swedish speaking region in Finland, often referred to as “the Islands of Peace”. Euro is the official currency in Åland, but most shops and other businesses accept Swedish crowns as well. In Finland and Åland the time is one hour ahead of Sweden and Central Europe and the same as in Eastern Europe.

HOSTS
Your camp host will be the Åland Peace Association-Emmaus. The Åland Peace Association is “Ålands Fredsförening” in Swedish. The Association was founded in 1982 and has today about 250 members. It works with various peace issues and aims to promote international understanding, solidarity and justice.
Emmaus started in 1989 and the activities include collecting and sorting second-hand goods, which are later sold in the Emmaus shop or sent to other countries as humanitarian aid. Emmaus is based in an old building, the “Old Dairy”, in the centre of Mariehamn. It has successfully been growing during recent years and functions today as a cultural centre as well. The second-hand shop “Emmaus Returbutik” is one of the most popular shops in town. Emmaus now has 17 employees and about 30 local volunteers. Many of Emmaus workers have had difficulties finding a job on the open labour market. You can find more information, also about last year’s work camp, at http://www.emmaus.ax/ . Emmaus also runs two labour market integration projects, Emmaus byggretur (recycling of building material, where the workers are long term unemployed) and Katapult (recycling of furniture, where the participants are young unemployed people).

WORK DURING THE CAMP
The work will take place at Emmaus shop and include sorting, packing and loading second-hand clothes, furniture etc., which will be sent as humanitarian aid to Baltic countries and Peru or sold at the Emmaus shop. We will also do some basic repairing of the Emmaus building as well as painting and gardening. Furthermore, we will help to organize the Hiroshima Day commemoration and the Cultural Night in town with music, poetry, and art. All the participants will take part in the Emmaus “fashion” show as models.
We will work Monday-Friday from 9.00-12.00, lunch break and work again from 14.00-17.00.

ACCOMMODATION
We will stay in a local youth house and go by bike to work. Address: Ungdomsgården UNCAN, Norra Esplanadgatan 8. In the youth house no alcohol is allowed. You should bring sleeping bags. In the house there are mattresses, a shower and bathrooms. Clothes can be washed at Emmaus. The food will be prepared by us, taking turns in pairs.

OTHER PROGRAMME
We will discuss Emmaus issues, new ideas and methods of working together. We will talk about Emmaus Europe, visions for the future and co-operation in certain fields, for example concerning the contemporary slavery (trafficking in human beings). We will visit the Åland Islands Peace Institute and learn more about their democracy projects in Lithuania, Belarus and Kaliningrad-region (Russia). During the visit to the local parliament we will learn about the Åland autonomy and demilitarisation.

FREE TIME
Free time activities will be fairly flexible – you will be able to choose yourselves from the many possibilities. What Åland can offer could be a boat trip to the sea, a bike tour, sightseeing, hiking, fishing, swimming, sunbathing on the beach, participating in cultural or sports events (the Chamber Music festival Katrina, PAF Open Volleyball tournament, Football ) etc.

WHAT TO BRING
-A sleeping bag
-Besides your summer clothes, pack some warm clothes, like a pullover, a sweater, a jacket or a raincoat as the weather in Finland is quite unpredictable. It might get sunny or cloudy, rainy or dry, warm or cool, even chilly and windy!
You will find work clothes at Emmaus. (and a lot of other things as well)
-Any recipes to prepare a good and simple meal for about 20-30 people

HOW TO GET HERE
The camp starts on Sunday the 5th of August at 18.00. Please inform us when you are going to arrive in Mariehamn. If you don’t inform us, we can’t pick you up and take you to the right place. Meeting place: Emmaus, Köpmansgatan 11, Mariehamn

If you arrive another time than Sunday 18.00 please call, nobody lives in the Emmaus house!

You can also walk from the harbour in Mariehamn to Uncan, where you are going to sleep, walk left after leaving the ferry terminal alomg the harbour til the road turns right by itself (not a crossing), follow the road or the avenue to the church, right next to the church there is a big yellow house and you are at Uncan!

If you arrive from Sweden:
If you are travelling from Sweden the best route is to take the Viking Line bus from Stockholm City Terminal to Kapellskär harbour and take the ferry “Ålandsfärjan” (Viking Line). You can buy tickets to both bus and ferry at the Viking Line office at the City Terminal. The trip takes about four hours.
Check time tables on the internet (www.vikingline.fi).

If you arrive from Finland:
Take a ferry from Turku (Åbo) (four hours) or Helsinki (ten hours) with either Viking Line or Tallink. Check time tables on the internet.

Travel

Travel to Åland
The easiest (fastest and cheapest) way to travel to Åland is to take a plane to Stockholm and then take the bus from Stockholm to Kapellskär and the ferry from there to Mariehamn, Åland.
You will arrive at the City Terminal with the bus or train from the airport and on the 1st floor (Where the busses leave from and arrive at) you can find the Viking line office for the ferrys, there you can buy a ticket for the bus to the Ferry in Kapellskär and the ticket for the ferry Ålandsfärjan. The bus and boat will take you to Mariehamn in 4 hours! Here you can find the timetable for the ferry:
http://www.vikingline.fi/timetables/timetables/timetables/mar_kap-alf.asp

There are also other options for travelling to Åland, by plane from Arlanda Stockholm (notice that Ryanair will take you to Skavsta or Västerås airport and other airtravel companies to Arlanda) or Helsinkki to Mariehamns airport will take about half an hour. Here you can see the timetables for the plane:
http://www.airaland.ax/text2.con?iPage=9&m=39

Viking line, Birka cruises and Tallink also have bigger cruiseferrys departing from Stockholm to Mariehamn with a travel time for about 6-8 hours.
Viking line and Tallink also departs from Turku (Åbo) and Helsinkki, Finland to Åland, that trip will be 5-12 hours
